come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an abingdon, virginia, rally. >> romney: there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month. the unemployment rate as you noted this year has come down very, very slowly. the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> eliot: mitt just can't stand good news on the economy, and neither can his friends on the right, including knocks fuss anchor stuart varney who suspect politics were behind the jobs numbers. >> oh how convenient that the rate dropped below 8% for the in 43 months five weeks before the election. >> eliot: unbelievable jobs numbers, these guys will do anything. can't debate so change numbers. tweeting in regards to today's jobs report, i agree with jack welch, chicago style politics is at work here. more about jack welch and g.e. and accurate numbers more in this show later. we have an interview with cnbc. >> we have a very professional civil ser

at 11:20 today. we want to know what you think these candidates should talk about, or what mitt romney should specifically address in his speech and what foreign- policy issues you think he needs to talk about more on the campaign trail. already getting reaction from facebook this morning. host: just below that, eleanor rights -- host: we want to get to your calls this morning, start calling in now. we have -- we will read to you a few more articles from this speech. "mitt romney strives to stand apart in global policy." host: again, that speech is happening at about 11:20 this morning. we will take our first call on this from clinton, illinois. matt is waiting on the independent line. good morning. caller: mitt romney needs to go after the whole libya at incident. he may have made a few missteps regarding coming out with information, but he needs to layoff of that, because it is one thing that he can actually use. i do not know if it will help his foreign policy, because obama can just come back and say -- that is what i did -- but that is something he will really have to focus on if

and to gut medicare. joe biden simply dismantled the romney/ryan world view. but also talk about how the right wingers are trying to make a big deal out of joe biden's smile. so what? i would have been outright laughing in paul ryan's face. joe biden was fed up and who could blame him? >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. >> and why is that so? >> because not a single thing he said is accurate. >> this is a bunch of stuff. >> what do you mean a bunch of stuff? >> it's simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> thanks for the translation. okay. >> malarkey. a bunch of stuff. i love it. i love it. biden systematically took apart ryan's arguments for less government, let's accountability, let's community. it got so bad, paul ryan was driven to drink. literally. he went back to that cup of water over and over again. by our last count, at least 21 time. what's the matter there, mr. ryan? got a little cotton mouth? last night the romney/ryan effort was exposed as a shield for the extreme far right and vice president biden drove that point home again and again today, campaigning r

, become more aggressive. he's talked a lot about big bird out there on the campaign trail. romney is now kind of attacking him for keeping talking about big bird and pbs. what do you make of where the obama campaign is right now? >> i make that the obama campaign sees an opening there. the question is every campaign, candidates stumble, openings come. the question is can you recover from your mistakes, can you seize the opening. president obama sees we're talking about the giant scope of the federal budget and governor romney mentions big bird and pbs. come on, he doesn't get it. that's what president obama is trying to say. he doesn't want to cut wall street, he wants to not hurt the rich people when it comes to taxes and he wants to beat up on big bird. what governor romney says, you saw him pivot again today, he says well, that's just one example but you have to give examples and you have to start making choices. we have to review everything and we can't keep from china. it helps both of them. conservatives love to hear their candidate beating up on pbs, on government subsidies, sayin

featuring ann romney. he has to find a way to talk to women. yes, he does very well with suburban men, almost a mirror image of the women numbers, but he has to get the suburban women up. his big area that he can mine is really married suburban women, so you're going to see them targeting a lot of ads to those women. >> john, you heard the people kind of doubting the polls that go against their candidate and supporting the polls that do. you have been following polls for years. you know as well as anyone they're snapshots in time. what's the significance of them in this race right now? >> well, there are so many of them and we are so polarized, in the twitterverse in our conversations, most of the polls show a tiny percentage of undecided because you have the democrat and republican camps. it doesn't surprise me that there's doubt. if anything happens against your guy, you immediately start a conspiracy theory. if you look at polls over the years, it's not an exact science, it's a snapshot in time. we will see if governor romney can sustain this bounce. the president got one ahead of

. spot mocks mitt romney's talk that he would stop funding to the pbs. >>> staying on the rice race to the white house, vice president joe biden and his rival paul ryan will go head-to-head in kentucky thursday night but they're not the only ones looking for debate-related boost. all of danville is hoping to benefit. streets repaved, and new signs in the small town and stores are stocked up on politically- themed merchandise. center college will play host. >> the campus has been transformed and there is for security and lodgistical reasons. >> reporter: the small town has experience here. center college hosted another debate in 2000. >>> our coverage includes you at home. we want to hear from you as we approach election day. use the hash tag fox5d.c. you decide and to tweet the thoughts about the candidates, issues, performances and elects as we count down to november. -- elections as we count down to november. >>> amtrak restored service between d.c. and wilmington, delaware. a power outage closed the section of the main rail lill line known new york and d.c. the outage was caused

this in some time. i have to tell you, i talked to a senior romney advisor about this pew research center poll and they look at a couple things here. in relation to these polls. they are looking at the enthusiasm that is coming out at some of their campaign events. i can tell you, we have been at several of these campaign events over the last several days and they are getting some big turnouts, sometimes in excess of 10,000 people, and while yes, that may not be obama campaign numbers, those are good numbers for mitt romney. another thing that they're looking at, they are looking at undecided voters. they feel like undecided voters, because of that debate being viewed by so many millions of americans last week, that mitt romney was able to reach through the filter of the media as they like to call it, ann romney referred to it that way in an event in florida last week, and beyond those campaign ads, the very nasty campaign ads coming from the obama campaign to talk directly to the american people, and they feel like that's a factor as well. they are also looking at what they call persuadable v

. seemed like the first debate between the president and governor romney was talking points, rehashed over and over again. >> i am going to send it back to sean. now that you've seen the candidates do you think either, no matter who wins this country will be better off do you think there is a clear choice now and you're nervous that the wrong candidate wins? >> i'm on the undecided side. i wasn't wooed over to either side by this debate. >> did anyone decide absolutely definitely who you're voting for without a doubt because of what you saw tonight? none of you? sean, that is important. we did this a week ago in denver. we had this huge shift of undecided to mitt romney. these people here took their opinions and they think joe biden did tell not critical of ryan but this biden did well but there is no fundamental shift like you saw a week ago. we're going to have to wait until next week's debate. >> sean: frank, appreciate it. we're going to check in with you throughout the evening. and in a few minutes we'll be joined by governor sara palin. y one of kentucky favorites, senator mitch mcco

mitt romney who talked about 38.5 minutes. that wasn't necessarily an advantage for the president. because romney was widely considered to have won that debate. there was less of a gaffe during the vice presidential debate four years ago. joe biden spoke just under 40 minutes. sarah palin spoke for 40 minutes and 29 seconds. biden and palin stood at podiums. tonight, biden and ryan will be sitting together at a table and that will affect the way they interact, possibly also the amount of time they talk. jessica yellin is at the media center. jim acosta is in the spin room. jessica, set the scene for us. what's going on? >> hi, wolf. i'm actually in the media filing center. this is where the press from around the nation, actually from around the world. there are some people in from koer countries, have come to watch the debate and file their stories. you can see around here, here's our sister company, mark halperin and people from press from all over the place. fili and this is the gymnasium for centre college. usually, they play basketball and sports in here. but tonight, we're wa

't let barack obama talk as much as mitt romney. well, yes, he did. actually, yes, obama talked more. he just had less to say. >> just like the republicans had a rolling set of excuses for the jobs numbers, so it goes both ways. >> those are conspiracies. >> there's a difference between excuses and full-blown conspiracies. by the way, i can't wait for the readjustment of those jobs numbers. by the way, we may have been off a little bit. >> stop it. oh, stop it. i've been studying that. >> i'll bet number. >> 7.8 is just fine, thank you. the president's debate performance remained a hot topic on the sunday talk shows. former presidential candidate newt gingrich and senior obama adviser david axelrod were asked if obama should have called out romney if he thought his opponent was being dishonest. >> the president of the united states had 90 minutes. now, if he had done his homework, if he had actually prepared, if he had actually studied romney, why didn't he say it? why didn't he take romney head on? first of all, the charge on the tax cuts is just plain wrong and i think virtually every

in lancaster. romney talked about how proud he was of the vice presidential choice and ryan's performance at the debate earlier this week. >> we got to watch this guy debate, and there was one person on the stage with thoughtfulness, who was respectful, who was steady and poised. there's one person on that stage you'd want to be with the there were a crisis and it's this man right here. >> romney and ryan are both in ohio today. this is the live picture from youngstown. paul ryan will be speaking there in just a few minutes from now. ohio is one of the key swing states for both romney and obama. both have spent a whole lot of time there talking to voters. so how are the voters receiving all that attention? cnn political editor paul steinhauser joining us now to talk about that. good morning to you what. is the story in ohio? >> reporter: ohio -- it sounds like a broken record. but these candidates keep going back to ohio. the second straight day for mitt romney. the president was just there earlier this week. here's my unofficial count here. since the start of the general election, which

less safe. >> i just want to talk to you about right in the middle of the crisis, governor romney-- and you're talking about this again tonight-- talked about the weakness, talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that really appropriate right in the middle of the crisis? >> on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall that they disavowed their own statement that they had put up earlier in the day in cairo. so we had the same position. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when the mullahs in iran were attacking their people. we should not have assad a reformer when he was turning his russian-provide guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, for democracy, for individual rights. and we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does, when we equivocate on our values, when we show that we're fighting our own defense it makes us more weak. it projects weakness, and when we look weak our

answer for america. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. and we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. we ended up moving from surplus to deficits. and it all culminated in the worst financial crisis since the great depression. >> i suppose mr. romney thought the president wouldn't recognize the term trickle-down if he twisted it around. romney is proposing boilerplate trickle-down economics providing tax relief for businesses with the false hope that they won pocket that money but rather put it into new jobs. help the rich get richer and then they'll help everyone else. but hey, mr. romney's plan as stated in the debate may in fact sound right to you. but don't call it new. it's a been there, done that track record. lower taxes on the rich, simply don't lead to job growth. when you compare the top marginal income tax rate, the tax rate that top earners get taxed over the highest threshold with employment, growth happens when taxes are higher, not lower. let me show you a chart that the president c

talked about this a lot. look at this. romney, ahead now in florida, north carolina, ohio and virginia. >> not ohio. >> ohio is down by one. >> he was so far behind. >> what we are seeing, in florida, which is a republican-leaning state if the race is tied, governor romney has a slight advantage. north carolina, he should win, as well. ohio is the key. all the swing states, including virginia, can go to governor romney but unless he wins ohio, he cannot win the election. ohio is now close to deadlocked. >>gregg: governor romney was down double digit. >> he was down in ohio, certainly. i don't know about double digits. notice news organization which spent all the money doing the state polls, we have not had one poll since the debate talking about the effect, favorability and other things. i will say this: one of the things that has happened, the race has the disconnect -- romney should you'd this, the $200 million or more spent making him into an eager and the president never made the charges. i would be out there torpedoing obama's add very advertising, why won't he say it himself? >>

's debate performance. i don't talk to conservatives at all that believe the mainstream media that romney won this debate by moving to the middle. we must be living on two totally different planets, because i don't hear that from conservatives at all. >> i believe keith believes you live on two different planets. michael, do you think it baloney? you have politico reporting several insiders felt that ann romney and tagg wanted mitt to be more personal and wanted him to perhaps soften the edges. despite what people like steve would want to hear as conservatives? let michael answer this. >> in the last 48 hours they've made efforts, the romney campaign has to humanize him. i reflect on the gop convention and the lost opportunity they had i thought the mormon testimonials were the most compelling aspect of the entire rnc. yet, it was lost because in primetime you didn't see it, only geeks like me tuned in and saw it. instead you saw clint eastwood and the empty chair. they recognize the errors of those ways and try to present him as more the massachusetts moderate to govern that state. >> in

mitt romney is and was last night. i mean, if he was talking, he was speaking last night, he was lying. and look, mitt romney had a good night, but you know, even a, you know, blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. >> are these dirty attacks, calling mitt romney a liar. is it a good idea for the democrats. we're back with our panel. brian some suggest this is classless to come and attack mitt romney for lying when the president didn't seen prepared and shell shocked and that's the response. he was so shell shocked that mitt romney was lying that he didn't know how to respond. >> and mitt romney's facts were tricky, we don't have time for that. let's include john sununu, romney's surrogate who said that obama is lazy, incompetent. has no idea what's going on. on both sides comments being made and let's not make this one-sided when you're talking about it. >> clayton: is that fair, tammy? >> americans and i think the tea party is a good example of this want to be told the truth. we have impressions of these guys and americans are going to make up their own mind and we know that p

how he can apply them to the ryan/romney ticket as a whole. what they really would like to do is talk a lot about those ryan fiscal policies. things like kucutting spending, reforming medicare, looking at social security. what biden would like to do is talk a lot about those issues. one issue for the vice president, he hasn't been doing a lot of interviews or interactions with reporters. he hasn't really been questioned on a lot of the claims he makes about the ryan budget on the campaign trail. so it's going to be sort of a new thing for him to be questioned by reporters by the moderator, and by the candidate himself on the claims he's making on how those budget policies would impact everyday americans. >> a lot was said four years ago about joe biden's debate with sarah palin. now, he has known congressman ryan for quite some time. they have dealt together. how do you expect the tone to be different? >> well, remember, four years ago, biden had really one big challenge. he didn't want to make any major mistakes. but his only really great big challenge in that debate was sarah palin

the same thing with my dad this weekend. >>> talk politics. president obama mitt romney entering the home stretch for the presidential race. the big one will be foreign policy. >> in a few hours mitt romney will layout the vision for how the world should view america. doug luzader is live in washington with more. >> election day four weeks from tomorrow. it is getting very very close. 4 points from four key swing states. in virginia it is getting a lot of attention today. mitt romney will be in is virginia delivering major foreign policy talks. strike while the iron is hot especially in the wake of the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya last month. romney is trying to build a post debate momentum. >> i am convince the you had the chance to hear his answers or nonanswers. now of course days later we are hearing his excuses and next january we will be watching him leave the white house for the last time. >> president obama made a return appearance to california last night. not because that state is at play but because hollywood has heavy hitters with deep pockets. >> we come a long way.

to administration officials. listen to romney last night in virginia talk about the unemployment rate. and 8%. listen what he said, john. >> we've seen the slowest recover from a recession in history. as a matter of fact, i just read that if you go back 60 years and look at all the bumps we had with unemployment above 8%, there were 39 months in all 60 years of unemployment. under this president there have been 43 months. >> romney not letting go of the 8% figure even though the unemployment rate has fallen there. he was in virginia last night. the unemployment rate is under 6% in virginia and iowa and approaching 7% in ohio. it's a tough argument for romney to make in certain swing states. >> mitt romney trying to maybe muddle the issue, talking about the 8% figure. you can stay with cnn for the vice presidential debate on thursday night. our coverage begins at 7:00 eastern. you can also go to cnn.com. >>> it's 16 minutes past the hour. let's get you up to date with our top stories. >>> jerry sandusky faces life behind bars when he's sentenced later this morning. he is expected to speak at

of it. the fact is there. romney's been talking about conditions. the president and the vice president have said they're coming home 2014. >> why did vice president biden hammer paul ryan tonight on the issue of him requesting stimulus funds for his district? i get that he caught him in a little bit of hypocrisy, but he's not realistically criticizing paul ryan for having asked for funds that the democratic side maintains has worked well? >> here's paul ryan criticizing the stimulus package, how terrible it was, deepening the deficit. then he makes personal requests for his own congressional district. that's a matter of record. i don't think paul ryan looked very good at the end of the day. he believed that stimulus plan was going to create jobs. that's exactly what it did. >> senator, this is ed. i don't know if pressure is the right word or not, but joe biden went in to this debate tonight. he had to accomplish something that maybe wasn't done in last week's debate. you being a veteran of the senate, i know you've known joe for a long time. was there any doubt in your mind that he wa

here. talk coming out all of the questions was about ann romney and michelle obama. we're not talking a lot about them. ann romney will be hosting "good morning america" tomorrow. what factors, do you think if any these two women may bring to the election and what we might see over the next four weeks? are they a factor? >> look the general argument out there that, spouses of candidates don't tend to win them elections. they can be a net draw back if they don't do a good job, if they plub or become a center of attention but neither women have been doing that what they have both proven they're very effective campaigners for their husbands an shoring up their messages. in that regard they're adding some ballast to both. campaigns. in particular reaching out to women voters we were just talking to. they're mostly there as sort of side by side to keep their husband's message out there, rather than necessarily winning the campaign on their own. jenna: said before in context today. good if they're not winning the campaign on their own because they're not the ones running for president, righ

the summer, carol, he talked about that foreign policy trip overseas. mitt romney was strongly criticized by some in the palestinian community after he basically said that the reason why the palestinian territory there is not doing very well is because of cultural differences with israel. there is one excerpt from the speech we want to show to you. this is basically where mitt romney is going to be going with this speech later on this morning. he is going to say, quote, we cannot support our friends and defeat our enemies in t middle east when our words are not backed by deeds, when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut, when we have no trade agenda to speak of and the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. it is time to change course in the middle east. one final thing, carol, on a campaign conference call yesterday romney's foreign policy team talked about some presidents of past they might be shaping their foreign policy principles after. they talked about the presidencies of jfk, truman and even bill clinton. after that first debate

romney is not latched onto all threat rick. but could all this talk, this talk, could it damage him in the long run? i mean, in some ways all it does is just highlight the fact we're talking below 8%. >> absolutely, alex. i think that the romney campaign didn't respond to that because they don't want to be anywhere near it. even some conservatives quickly denounced those remarks, that tweet by jack welch. and i think that frankly for the obama administration those people who believe jack welch are not going to vote for president obama, anyway. and i think actually it's probably going to go away fairly quickly just because the romney campaign doesn't want to really touch this. >> the fact that he has to talking about mitt romney has to drop his line about the 8 plus percent from his campaign speeches, how much does that hurt him? >> as i said, he's been saying 8%. the president has been promising 8%. he hasn't delivered. that's one of the main attacks governor romney has been using, he's been bringing up that number repeatedly on the campaign trail. yesterday what you saw was the gov

and this is a politically charged issue. how many weeks ago was it that mitt romney was in so much trouble for not talking about veterans and not mentioning the afghanistan war at the republican convention in tampa? it is also interesting that the sense of hope you mentioned -- you are open to a buy at least a part-time job or a full-time job. -- find at least a part-time job or a full-time job. these are the months where people are wanting to hire part- time employees to make up for the extra work there will be for the holiday season. host: 44,000 jobs bump in the health-care industry according to the bureau of labor statistics. as our guest minted at our caller mentioned, a drop in manufacturing. there is a question about explaining the criteria that the department of labor uses statistics -- department of labor uses as statistics. guest: people can make a lot of the unemployment rate in one way. on the other side, there will be people who can stand it the other way. people who have been employed for a certain amount of time have to cross the threshold in terms of how long you have been employed. it is

willing to talk about? >> the only thing i would say is the romney campaign does not seem to be trying to, the obama folks have spent a lot of money talking about the debate, forget big bird, but the real ads are in the battleground states. the romney campaign hasn't done that. >> when you have chris the media does it enough and when you have chris matthews spreading the message for you, why do it yourself? >> but there is a danger of overconfidence. yes, it was one debate. we have two more debates and the vice presidential. i don't know how much that will matter, but -- >> it's the most important event this week. >> but 28 days is a long time. >> most important event this week, until the next one. all right, stick around. i want to talk a little senate when we come back on the other side and i have nathan here. i can't help myself. and a "roll call" guy. we're in geek heaven, right, liz? trivia time. we asked who were the first vice presidential candidates to participate in a televised general election debate? the answer? democrat wars! bob dole and walter mondale, the 1976 vice presiden

health care decisions. governor romney talks about freedom. but freedom is the ability to determine the care you need when you need it. freedom is the ability to change jobs or start your own business without the fear of losing your health insurance. freedom is the knowledge that you'll no longer be charged more than men for the same health care. or denied affordable coverage just because you've beat cancer. and at a time when women make up nearly half the work force, and an increasing share of family bread winners, these are not just health issues or women's issues. these are economic issues that are vital and affect every family in america. they matter. when -- when a woman is the main bread winner for her family but takes home less pay for the same work, as a man does because she's a woman, that is not right. when my opponent's campaign was asked if he'd support legislation given -- giving women the tools to fight for an equal day's pay for an equal day's work, he said we'll get back to you on that and since then refused to explain his position. you've already got my answer. upho

. this is something the romney campaign likes to talk a lot about. reviews generally believe if this vice president joe biden made a mistake last night it was all he framed the administration's response to attacks on libya. this will be revisited that night. jamie: and even before. bill: each party as you can imagine naming their candidates the winner today. the republicans say ryan maintained the upper hand and withstood the biden barrage. here is kentucky senator rand paul. >> i think the president loses some points at least skaoeul lisleast style list likely looking like a cheshire cat back there. >> did romney compete. >> we have massive unemployment? what is the administration doing, what they are doing is not working, what are they going to do differently? >> the obama campaign is cheering joe biden per performance saying he laid out a clear vision for our future. >> in terms of style, joe biden is joe biden. he's authentic and real and straightforward and says what he thinks and what he means and he spoke from a lifetime of experience. and congressman ryan basically spoke that the cue cards

in the battleground states. you know, we -- i have been to michigan several times. we talked about can governor romney put pennsylvania into play. both of these states were out of reach, michigan and pennsylvania heading into the first debate. look where they are now. dead heat statistically in the state of michigan, where romney was born. his dad was governor. in pennsylvania, a close race as well with the president oh top. i'm a bit skeptical. i want to see if this happens in a second and third poll but this is vy important. states like this suddenly being in play heading into the final couple of weeks because if the president has to start spending time and money defending pennsylvania and defending michigan, that means less time the president is spending in florida, in ohio, in the western battlegrounds. at the moment the map is expanding, finally the romney campaign would say in its favor. >> interesting. john, thanks. >>> let's dig deeper. let's look forward to round three of the debates on tuesday, where the campaign is headed. joined by patrick millsaps, former chief of staff and paul begala. t

think ryan and romney, while they talk about having a five-point plan, they are not willing to be specific. they are not willing to be specific about their $5 trillion in tax cuts and what they are going to do for the middle class. >> can i ask you both quickly, and look further ahead than tuesday night. 2016, did either of these candidates, do you think, increase their chances, maybe of running for president, if not then maybe for paul ryan in the future? >> 2016 -- i hope we don't have to talk about 2016. we have 26 more days to talk about this one and then can we take a break before we get to that? >> i think it's more like 2020 for paul ryan because i expect that mitt romney will be elected and we'll be standing again in 2016. paul ryan did help himself. he came across informed, sober, credible, wasn't flustered by biden's antics. i think that was important. i think you'll see a lot of swing voters and independent voters gravitate to that style, that tone that he did show a level of leadership people are looking for. >> always good to have you on the program. thank you.

talking about big bird. >> romney spoke before a community of farmers that big bird made an appearance in the skies overhead. it's the result of romney saying that he'll cut funds for public television. >>> former president bill clinton is at uc davis right now to endorse four northern california democrats. it's an event in support of congressman john of wall nut creek and jerry of stockton. also getting clinton's endorsement state, the medical doctor and nasa astronaut jose hernandez from the central valley. >>> a decision is due by the san francisco supervisors this afternoon. they are meeting in less than two hours to determine the fate of suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. prosecutors are depart at city hall. cher have i there to let us know what's at stake, good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, the protesters here are actually the supporters, they showed up about a half hour ago. they've been doing chants on and off. they're here on the front steps of city hall. one person told us she was a person of domestic violence, she didn't feel it was considered abuse. now the board o

can accomplish what i have. >> reporter: yesterday on cnn mitt romney talked about what he would do if elected president when it comes to taxes. when he talked about the home mortgage reduction, this is something that appeals to a lot of people. heading into the closing days, zoraida, it is important to reach out to everybody. this is going to be a very close race. we have seen it as polls are closing right now. the new confident mitt romney we are seeing that on display and we saw that yesterday. >> the polls are coming out fast and furious. you are in kentucky, the site of the presidential debate, what can you tell us about the two sides? >> reporter: two veteran members of congress will be squaring off. joe biden in congress since the '70s and we have paul ryan, the budget chairman. a lot of people say that joe biden has the upper hand because he's been around longer, but let's not underestimate paul ryan. he is a very effective communicator and has been studying very hard. he's been in florida just prepping for the debate. we expect him to arrive here in kentucky later tonight.

starting at 9:00. >>> amother wants mitt romney to stop talking about her son during the campaign speeches. former navy steel glen dougherty was killed during the consulate attack in libya last month. romney has recently been telling voters about i achristmas dinner he shared with romney two years ago. his mother said she does not want her son's death to be part of romney's political agenda. >>> coming up next, can't seem to find your desk adrianne all of those pile of paper. having trouble keeping tabs on everything you've got do? >> it is a problem businesses deal with every single day. a new app is coming to the rescue. up next, lauren demarco shows us how it is taking the pain out of paperwork. financially stable. we were poor. the mgm casino in michigan. and it changed her life. clerk. way up. insurance... and i make great money. seven will create... twelve thousand jobs. to accountants... and construction workers. place to work with good pay... let me tell you how i will for create 12 million jobs when president obama couldn't. first, my energy independence policy means more than thr

's what you're talking about. let's get this straight. it's not about the grand kids. the romney plan is for people 55 and you under -- >> it's giving them the option for something -- >> it will destroy medicare. >> no, it won't. >> this is fascinating stuff. they have been showing for months evenly divided here into two. the registered voters and the likely voters. now they're doing both. among registered voters president obama has a three-point lead over mitt romney. 49%, 46% among registered. but among likely voters romney is leading by two points. if you look at the trend line of recent polling, you can see that obama in the blue line really picked up in september following his convention. we all saw that happen but he dropped and romney started gaining in the past several days following the debate. and as you just mentioned, bob, from ohio the president's firewall, a new cnn/opinion research poll shows obama up by four, 51%/47% among likely voters. that poll was taken after the debate -- actually after the debate. before the debate obama had a wider margin. i should point out som

where mitt romney stands on the issues. he talked about not taxing the wealthy. now he says he will tax the wealthy. he talks about energy independence now but didn't support the president on his programs to create alternative forms of energy for our country, which this president did. he talks about tax changes to help business development. who did that? president obama, with 100% tax credit in manufacturing, for example, which has just sizzled across the industrial midwest with the business start-ups that we see. even art furnaces being installed on the ohio republic steel. we haven't seen this in two decades. so, he can talk as a candidate, but the president has done it in a very difficult situation that he inherited from the bush administration, where the whole country's economy collapsed because of those titans up on wall street that tied up the finances of this country, and literally, we've had the largest transfer of wealth in american history from main street to wall street. you think that mitt romney, who was a part of that culture, is going to change anything for the people of

in romney's trajectory toward pennsylvania avenue? i mean, this strategy, talking about big bird. >> yeah, well, look at it this way, the debate was so dispiriting for the president's base that, you know, this is the one thing when you played the clip of the president making the big bird joke, what happened? tons of laughter. this is something that i'm sure the campaign realizes the base likes it, it gets them re-energized and refocused, and keep in mind -- >> doesn't it remind them, though, of what a stinky debate it was for president obama? i mean, doesn't it take you back to all of this, that this was a lackluster performance for a man who wants to keep his job? >> right, yes, so it was a lack buster performance and there's no getting around it. you can't pretend that that debate didn't happen, but you've got to do something to remind, to sort of get the voter, to get your base wound up again. because remember, this is a base election. whichever person, whichever candidate can get his base out to the polls, that's going to be the margin of victory. and with regard to the swing state po

was talking about mitt romney's performance. and when you're doing that it tends to be an indicator that that side knows that they lost. >> as we look ahead to the town hall, what did joe biden do whether substantive or stylistic that president obama should adopt? >> well, i think that joe biden re-energized the debate and the base of the party. a lot of people wanted to jump ship were panicking. he went out and really got everyone excited again. the president needs to step up in the next debate and do his job. remember, this is the guy who told hillary clinton that you're -- he can really step it up when he chooses to step it up. he need to get a good night's sleep, don't worry about the altitude and really get in there. >> that is so random. really? that's just really a stretch on that one. anyway, so susan, you can expect the president to be a lot tougher this time around, i know. how should mitt romney approach this debate? do you think he's going to be spending a lot of timan inning openings left by paul ryan? >> i don't think they'll get too much into what paul ryan said in hi

to romney's level. you can't make an excuse the second time. talk about a must win. that's the flipside. >> we were saying last week that mitt romney's back was against the wall, and if mitt romney didn't stand up and deliver, the election was over. we were saying that here, and guess what? that was just the case. a lot of freakazoids on the extreme right didn't want to hear. they wanted to blame the pollsters and the media. romney had to stand up and deliver. he stood up and delivered, so we reset the campaign. guess what? the shoe is on the other foot now. if barack obama blows it again like the first debate, i aagree with donny. that creates momentum that pushing mitt romney towards the finish line. >> we focus and talk a lot -- >> by the way, now it's left wingers who are filling my twitter feed calling me a bigot and calling all of us racists because we hate black people because we're saying the truth, mitt romney won the debate. the hatred is coming from the left and there's some desperation over there because obama has to stand and deliver, and nobody can do it for him. >> we foc

with the lady talking about the foreign policy issue. i think mitt romney is an opportunist. he went overseas and is respected our allies. -- disrepected all of our allies. he is an opportunist. he kisses up to benjamin netanyahu on foreign-policy. i think obama is steadfast. he talked to benjamin netanyahu on the phone for hours. it's not like he has been dodging him. he does not is up to foreign -- does not kiss up to foreign leaders. the talks to them like a leader. in the debate, obama held his head up high and did not have his head down like everybody said he did. as far as the media, i don't think the real voters actually thought that. i think a lot of people just followed what the media was saying as far as what he was talking about -- i mean what the media was talking about when they said obama did not hold his head up high. i think he was very presidential and very calm. i think. mitt romney think. -- i think mitt romney was desperate. host: we will hear the candidates debate on policy in the coming weeks. can you reflect on the earlier part of what he was saying? guest: i think romn

much so. mitt romney's best moments in that debate came when he talked about patriotic grace. when he talked about bipartisanship, his ability to work with democrats, how patriotism should leaven our understanding of politics so that we can get things done. it was lyrical and lovely. especially for someone who doesn't excel it back like mitt romney. that is what people want. they want to see people working again and leadership that allows that to happen. what joe biden was saying, was very much what we heard over the debate of the stimulus when obama came into office, and over his 2010 health law. we won, elections have consequences, you lose, you are repudiated. that is not what voters want to hear. they want to hear the patriotic grades. megyn: one viewer wrote to us and said the old man tried to push around a kid and the kid tried to stand his ground. was it just a spirited politician? forcefully advocating for his position? peter johnson junior will be here momentarily. we will be asking him about that and we will play more from the vice presidential debate see you can make up you

in reality. how can a fast-talking salesman like mr. romney change people's minds and changed their vote? should they not be looking deeper and researched the facts? just talkingy that about energy policy can in any way to create 3 million jobs. you have to look beyond what they are saying and look for the truth, because it's nothing but a snake oil salesman talking. host: do you want to hear them go back and forth tonight interrupting each other or do you want a moderator to step in more and try to control the environment? caller: i would definitely like to see the moderator not let them ramble on. host: so you want time constraints? caller: yes, definitely. i was so disappointed that people are not looking beyond words, because anyone can say anything. host: this was a style section of the washington post this morning about the role of the moderator -- that was about the moderator. the washington times this morning as a piece thishow president obama attended mark their ballotss -- attended martha raddatz's mary stuart ex- husband and some are concerned that she will be biased tonight.

to talk about paul ryan's budget. the idea in general is to tie governor mitt romney -- sorry, tie governor romney to the ryan budget. and as one top democrat put it to me, the idea is to make the case that romney/ryan in electing that ticket means americans would be electing the intellectual leader of the house republicans, as one person put it, that paul ryan is the intellectual leader of the house republicans and he should not be able tonight to duck from any specifics. so, again, we will hear that word, specifics. and look for the vice president to try to get paul ryan to talk about budget details in this debate tonight, wolf. >> jessica, has the vice president done his tour of the actual debate hall yet? >> reporter: he has. he did that tour a little earlier today before 2:00 p.m. he sat in the chair. he looked at the monitor where you get your time cues. and i'm told all that went smoothly. he also before he boarded the plane today leaving from delaware he talked to reporters and he was asked what is his strategy. take a listen to what he said. >> i'm looking forward to it. n

minutes for ryan to explain the romney/ryan plan. give all the time he can to ryan to talk about his plan. >> are you saying that vice president joe biden has a propensity for ver basty. >> ryan should talk more. >> should he bring a white board so ryan can do the math? >> i don't think the math adds up. give him a $2 calculator and let him play with it. >> biden has to defend the obama budget out 10, 20, 30 years where everything crashes and burns. he hasn't put a measure on the ballot. the democratic senate hasn't put out a budget and they haven't put out any reforms for entitlements. >> those guys don't want a white board. >> the good thing about obama is with him you get what you -- what he says. he's been very clear the whole time. he wants a balanced approach. he wants to cut here. he wants to raise taxes here. with the hat tricks from romney, you don't know what you're going to get. >> i think grover got into more and you did, van, more substance than we might see tonight. there's going to be all this substance and policy talk, but it's style. these debates are style. which is why

choked up talking about navy seal glenn dougherty who died in a consulate attack in libya, a man romney said he once met. >> you can imagine how i felt when i found out that he was one of the two former navy seals killed in benghazi on september 11th. and it -- it touched me obviously as i recognized this young man that i thought was so impressive had lost his life in the service of his fellow men and women. >> reporter: now that the race is essentially tied, romney's advisors expect the obama campaign to shift away from sesame street tactics to what they call character attacks. but those officials are confident that those attacks will not work saying voters are now tuned into the debates and eager to hear solutions. wolf. >> jim acosta, thank you. and this remiepder, mitt romney will join me live right here in "the situation room" at 6:00 p.m. eastern. that's only here on cnn. much more on this story coming up. >>> meanwhile, in ohio and elsewhere both campaigns are ramping up their get out the vote efforts. and that's uncovering a problem that didn't exist before the housing crisis hi

romney was going for while talking to voters in virginia. >> the president calls his policies going forward. i call them forewarned. >> the unemployment rate fell because people gave up. >> when i'm president of the united states -- that unemployment rate is going to come down not because people are giving up and dropping out of the work force. we're creating more jobs. >> on social media, some conservatives accuse the obama administration of doctoring the jobs numbers. jack welch wrote, unbelievable job numbers. the chicago guys will do anything, can't debate? they'll change the numbers. >> it's lead yous to hear that statement. >> the secretary of labor denies any political motivation, saying the numbers are real. so while romney launches tv ads promising to do better than president obama. >> i have a detailed floon create 12 million new jobs. >> obama is celebrating this report. >> this country has come to far. >> a bench mark proves america is on the right track. >> economists say the number of new jobs being created is still not enough to significantly lower the unemployment ra

the election. most people are watching, and it takes away a key talking point for governor romney. he was saying for 43 months straight, unemployment was above 8%. it's no longer something me can say. >> okay. ed, with respect to the conspiracy theories, despite jared doesn't want to give it more oxygen, just a little bit more here. mitt romney is not latched on to their rhetoric. could all of this talk damage him, though, in the long run? in some ways it's highlighting the fact it's below 8%. this number, 7.8. >> it certainly robs him of the ability to say in a campaign speech as he has since he launched his campaign, that the unemployment rate is above 8%. but as he said yesterday, most americans would agree with him on, you know, we can do better. the number still isn't good. i think everyone would agree looking at the numbers that came out yesterday that, you know, 100,000-plus is fine, but really want to create 200,000-plus. you want to see employment growth everywhere. you don't want to see hundreds of thousands of people leaving the workforce. on that, there is general agreemen
